One of the recommendations of the last energy review was to establish a new national energy research centre with a remit to carry out research and development on energy matters. As a result, the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), which is a central part of the £28 million cross-research council programme "Towards a Sustainable Energy Economy (TSEC)", was set up in 2004. It is funded by three research councils: the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). According to its own promotional literature, the UKERC says it will "provide the knowledge needed to work towards a sustainable energy system and realise UK energy policy goals". Dr Dominic Maclaine asked its research director about what he thinks the latest review should address.
