The recent interruptions in Russian gas exports to Europe came as no surprise to some energy experts such as Professor John Gittus. Back in 2002~ⅰ he predicted the likely problems that piping gas to Europe through Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the other countries would probably entail. Four years on, and prompted by the current energy review, he has updated his analysis and extended it to include all of the things that might interrupt the UK's electricity supplies. These include the damage to off-shore windfarms due to winter storms, terrorist attacks on nuclear installations~ⅱ, fires at Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminals, piracy and many other factors. He concludes that certain low-carbon scenarios for the generation of electricity from various fuels are also scenarios that have comparatively high security of supply. In other words, it is possible to identify mixes of generation-methods that simultaneously go a long way towards satisfying two requirements, which are: a minimum contribution to global warming and a maximum security of electricity-supply.
