RWE Npower and Eon UK have submitted Section 36 applications to build large gas-fired power facilities near to liquified natural gas (LNG) import facilities. Together, projects at Pembroke (RWE) and Grain (Eon) would increase UK capacity by 4.4GW by around 2010. On January 4, Eon UK announced it had started the application process "that could see its Grain oil-fired power station in Kent converted into the most powerful gas-fired station in Europe." The company has put in an application for S36 consent to convert two existing 650MW oil-fired units (numbers 1 and 4) at the station to gas. Each of the unit's steam turbines would have three 400MW gas-fired turbines fitted to them - taking total site capacity to 2,400MW. Units 2 and 3 will remain in "deep mothballs".
