Two year's ago the UK government published its White Paper dubbed "Our energy future - creating a low carbon economy". One of the primary policy measures currently in place to achieve this is the Renewables Obligation (RO). However, there are problems with the RO. In a new report, the National Audit Office has flagged up its high cost. This, and its other conclusions, will feed into this year's RO review which in turn may result in a wider government rethink on how to achieve carbon emission reductions. In the following article, Dr Dominic Maclaine sets out the issues highlighted in the report and speculates on the future of the RO.
