EDF has presented significantly improved debt figures for end-2004, marred somewhat by the fact that off-balance items continue to grow. Repayment of debt is expected to be a priority for any funds raised from selling a stake in grid company RTE to another public sector entity, and from an initial public offering some time after October this year. Together these could raise ?10 billion or more. Financial debt on the balance sheet was ?19.7 billion at year-end compared to ?24 billion year-end 2003, while off-balance sheet debt rose 8.4% to ?13.2 billion, mainly because of an increase in Latin American liabilities. The other major liabilities are in Italy and Germany. In absolute terms, the financial debt on the EDF balance sheet is still above the level of 2000, but is lower as a percentage of EBITDA.
