摘要

A debate on energy policy has so far failed to feature significantly in the campaigns of political parties vying for votes in the forthcoming general election. The outcome of the election, scheduled for May 5, is not likely to see the UK depart significantly from the renewable-friendly, low emission aims of the Labour government's 2003 energy white paper. That is for two reasons. First of all, the polls seem to indicate Labour will win again. Second, the opposition parties have also expressed themselves in favour of fighting climate change and therefore might not change policy substantially if they did come to power. However, whichever party wins, the one major shift that might be apparent after the election could be increased open support for new nuclear power in the UK. Nuclear power is seen by many as the best way for the UK to maintain a balanced energy mix, rather than becoming completely reliant on imported gas, while keeping carbon dioxide emissions low. Continued use of coal in the generation mix would avoid using gas for all generation, but also adds to emissions. UK political parties have been muted in their backing for nuclear power so far, perhaps for fear of scaring voters. But after the election is over, they may be able to speak more freely.
