Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) announced a sharp rise in pre-tax profits this month. Pre-tax profits for the year to March 31 grew by 17% from £607.3 million to £712.8 million. The main driver was an increase in operating profit within the generation and supply businesses of nearly 30% (29.5%) £298.5 million to £386.5 million on the back of an increase in turnover of £2.3 billion. Generation and supply accounted for nearly half of SSE's total £790 million group operating profit. The increase came from a combination of higher electricity prices and increased turnover - SSE has 10GW of kit and is now second only to British Energy in terms of generation capacity. During 2004/05, SSE's power stations (wholly-owned and owned by joint ventures) generated 37.9TWh of electricity, an increase of 14.7TWh on the previous year.
