A BBC poll has found 52% of respondents opposed to an expansion of nuclear power in the United Kingdom. The survey, conducted by the BBC's Newsnight programme, also asked which energy sources respondents believed were the most feasible way of meeting the UK's future energy demands while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. A total of 57% of those polled chose renewable sources such as wave, tidal, solar and wind power. The poll found that 21% of those questioned believed nuclear power stations were the most feasible compared to 12% for coal/gas power stations. About 10% said they did not know. The findings are potentially significant because the government is expected to consider construction of new nuclear power plants as part of efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
