Ofgem has opted to extend NGC's system operator incentive scheme by one year rather than introduce more radical changes before the advent of British wide transmission and trading arrangements (Betta) next year. The current 'shallow' system operator scheme, which rewards NGC for running the transmission system efficiently, will be extended in almost the exact same form for 12 months from April (see table). According to a new document,. NGC has been finding it increasingly hard to reap the maximum benefit from its incentive scheme. In 2002/3 it received just over ￡48m from the scheme - less than the maximum possible. And Ofgem reckons this current year's performance will see NGC's reward diminish further.
