South Korea has a population of about 46 million, twice the size of Taiwan but about one-third that of Japan. Its people are extremely competitive, particularly when it comes to matters relating to Japan. Yet its PCB industry has depended very much upon Japan's PCB industry, from equipment and materials to technologies. In recent years, however, Korea's PCB industry has assumed its own course. Excluding special materials, Korea is now becoming self-sufficient in laminates and chemicals, as well as in certain equipment. This month we explore how the PCB industry in Korea is shaping up. Korea's PCB output last year is estimated at $2,08 billion. Of this, the 10 leading manufacturers produced 90% and the top five were responsible for 78%. There are about 120 large and small PCB makers in Korea. Clearly, the domestic industry is very much dependent upon several large makers. The table shows the output of Korea's top 10 manufacturers in 2000 in U.S. dollars, calculated using an exchange rate of 1,100 won/US$1. (The exchange rate is currently fluctuating between 1,250 and 1,300 won/US$1. The average exchange rate last year was about 1,290 won/US$l.) Judging from preliminary data collected from South Korean PCB firms, the total output may be down 10% year-on-year in local currency (based on the 2000 exchange rate). If the forecasted output for last year is converted to U.S. dollars at the exchange rate prevalent in 2001, it may be down 17 to 18%. It is interesting to observe that while most large PCB manufacturers in Taiwan lost revenue last year, three large makers in South Korea performed well, considering the poor year. South Korea's relatively large domestic market is a great help for these makers.
