The rushto China is on! What was a steady flow is now a torrent. The entire electronics supply chain wants in, it seems, despite a lack of knowledge of the perils involved. The CPCA Show, held in mid-March, was a rousing success in spite of the fact that no new major technology was displayed. The show appears to have outgrown the Intex Shanghai exhibition hall, with booths overflowing into a pair of tents straddling the main entrance. More Americans were present than in past years. Attendance from Korea was surprisingly large. The technical sessions were crowded. The mood was generally optimistic, though there were reports of a comment made by a Compeq exec warning against building excess capacity in mainland China. Many attendees said they would skip IPC Printed Circuits Expo, reasoning they could see whatever products they wanted at the "local" shows (JPCA, TPCA, CPCA). In fact, talk of a future co-location of the CPCA Show with Electronic China surfaced, and talk of increased cooperation among the CPCA, TPCA, and HKPCA at future exhibitions also made its rounds.
