Scrambling to position themselves to tap into China's lucrative electronics market, a pair of competing trade shows squared off in Shanghai in mid-March. When the dust stirred up from those moving between the shows had settled, the CPCA Show topped its Electronic China rival in round one, but no clear long-term victor had emerged. Judging by the teeming crowds on the show floor, the CPCA Show was a hands-down success. From the time the doors opened March 12 to the close three days later, approximately five thousand attendees crammed the two floors on the Intex Convention Center. (The China Printed Circuit Association reported substantially higher attendance ― 20,000 ― but sans the means in place to count, it was unclear how CPCA arrived at its numbers.) Anecdotal reports suggested larger North American and European contingents than in years past. CPCA estimated 10% of the attendees were international, mostly from Korea. Most companies PC FAB spoke with said they were there to form alliances and "find out what all the noise is about," as one PCB executive told PC FAB.
