First-half profits at public South Korean manufacturing firms reached $12 billion, their highest level and three times larger than the same period of last year. Electronics companies, including PCB manufacturers, contributed a large part, enjoying strong demand from domestic companies. The Korean PCB industry is probably the busiest in the world, yet managers cannot relax. Time was, Korean electron- ics companies purchased boards from domestic manufacturers. It was very common for customers and vendors to have special relationships. But the mindset is changing. Now, lower-cost vendors are sought outside of the country. Taiwanese manufacturers could be the first candidates. They have already been penetrating the Korean markets, offering the same quality at lower prices. Overall, PCB price levels have been dropping fast over the past several months. Korea will see more competition, including from operations in mainland China. Japanese PCB companies encountered a similar situation several years ago. Korean makers are following the same path. I would advise Korean management to review history. What kinds of PCB companies could survive the severe competition of the foreign vendors?
