This issue of Problems of Economic Transition deals with several aspects of the current situation in Russia and the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).rnAfter a decade of impressive growth, the Russian economy is in a severe recession, as are many other emerging economics. Many observers agree that macroeconomic mismanagement remains the major risk for the Russian economy. The challenges facing Russia include, but are not limited to, improving infrastructure, combating corruption, reforming the tax system, and enforcing the rule of law. Meanwhile, Kremlin policymakers, the "tandem" Vladimir Putin-Dmitry Medvedev team, continue to increase the state's influence in most sectors of the Russian economy, and this trend is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.
