摘要

Obesity has reached an epidemic level worldwide, partly due to decreased physical activity and increased intake of palatable high-calorie foods. Accordingly, efforts devoted to understanding and pharmaceutical intervention of obesity are in progress. Identification of leptin, a hormone secreted by adipocytes, represents a breakthrough in understanding the physiology of energy balance and obesity (1). Unfortunately, the therapeutic value of leptin is limited, as most obese subjects exhibit hyperleptinemia and leptin resistance rather than leptin deficiency. Evidence indicates that obesity is a high-risk factor for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, liver disorders, and some types of cancer.
