Multipotential progenitor cells in the newly formed embryonic retina can give rise to any or all of the six main retinal cells types. These main types can further subdivide into multiple functionally, structurally, and molecularly distinct subtypes, but the mechanisms that cause these subtypes to emerge remain unclear. Irina De la Huerta et al. (pp. 17663-17668) identified the origin of one such subtype: retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) that respond selectively to vertical motion and express the gene cadherin 6 (cdh6).
