The origin of language's universal and recurring patterns is a key question among linguists and cognitive scientists. Whereas one view holds that language patterns arise from constraints specific only to language, a competing theory posits that languages are shaped by human cognitive pressures associated with language acquisition and use. In two experiments with 40 participants Maryia Fedzechkina et al. (pp. 17897-17902) test the latter theory, specifically addressing whether people learning a language for the first time alter the language's rules to better clarify the intended meaning of a sentence. The authors exposed the English-speaking participants to two miniature artificial languages that use suffixes on nouns to indicate subject or object.
