Age-associated decline in the quality of eggs women produce can lead to infertility, miscarriage, and fetuses with genetic disorders. Among the causes of poor egg quality are defects in chromosomal separation during meiotic cell division and clumping of mitochondria within the cytoplasm of eggs. Kaisa Selesniemi et al. (pp. 12319-12324) tested the effects of caloric restriction-a dietary regimen that has been shown to slow the ravages of age in mice-on the quality of mature eggs produced by aging mice. The authors report that 12-month-old female mice that were maintained on a 40% calorie-restricted diet from 3.5 months of age produced eggs of noticeably better quality than did age-matched mice fed a normal diet.
