Clostridium difficile is a species of bacteria that naturally resides in thernhuman body and can cause severe intestinal disease if competing bacteria are eradicated by antibiotics. Treatment of C. difficile infections can be difficult, because of antibiotic resistance and the bacteria'srnphysiological factors, such as its ability to form spores and a protective membrane. Clinicians have reported growing numbers of infections due to virulent C. difficile strains. Mary Rea et al. (pp. 9352-9357) isolated 30,000 bacteria from healthy and diseased human fecal samples and identified a single colony of bacteria that produced effective antimicrobial peptides against C. difficile. The peptides, together termed thuricin CD, inhibited C. difficile growth in vitro but did not affect several other beneficial human gut bacteria.
