The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans uses scent to find food and avoid pathogens. Although researchers have known that pathogenic microbes infect the worms by exploiting their dependence on odors, the microbes' mode of attack and arsenal of tools are poorly understood. To unravel the mechanism of pathogenesis of nema-tode-infecting bacterium Bacillus nematocida B16, Qiuhong Niu et al. (pp. 16631-16636) conducted a series of experiments in Petri dishes and natural soil with the wild-type bacteria as well as with mutant bacteria from which suspected virulence factors were eliminated.
