Alveoli are tiny, sac-like structures in the lung where the exchange of gases occurs: oxygen enters the blood; carbon dioxide exits. The sacs contain a balance of fluids that facilitate this gas exchange. Maintaining this fluid balance requires the coordination of channels and pumps in the membrane of the alveoli. When the pumps fail because of lung injury or acute respiratory distress syndrome, the sacs fill with fluid and cause pulmonary edema, which can lead to respiratory failure, coma, or death. Previous studies have shown that bone marrow-derived multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) help reverse lung injury and pulmonary edema in mice. Jae Lee et al.
