The Women's Network started rather unexpectedly with an event meant to be a one-off panel discussion on the under representation of women in the investment profession. The 20% Event held in May 2013 featured a panel discussion with leading women in the industry talking about their own experiences and interpretation of why so few women feature on the leadership ranks of the financial industry. It quickly became evident in the build up to the event that there was a need for something more permanent; an initiative focusing on driving change and addressing long held underlying issues. Sarah Maynard, ASIP, director of career development for the society at the time, said: "When I joined CFA UK at the beginning of 2012, having left active fund management 15 years before, I was amazed to find that the investment profession still had so few women - no more than when I left. When we checked the society's membership, I found only 20% were women. Out of that statistic emerged the first 20% Event, which in turn launched the CFA UK Women's Network and its dedicated Committee."
