Employee well-being may be directly linked to worker health and productivity, according to a case study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The study reveals that one company's program to improve employee well-being led to improvements in worker health and productivity while simultaneously decreasing healthcare costs. "The Value of a Well-Being Improvement Strategy: Longitudinal Success Across Subjective and Objective Measures Observed in a Firm Adopting a Consumer-Driven Health Plan," which analyzed more than 2,000 individuals over 5 years, evaluated the long-term impact of a plan offering employees a range of benefits to promote well-being; these benefits include on-site fitness activities, intensive smoking cessation initiatives and weight loss programs.
