ISO is doing its work to ensure that cranes do not pose hazards during an earthquake. The organization says its new standard, ISO 11031:2016 Cranes-Principles for Seismically Resistant Design, can be used to calculate seismic loads, and it establishes designs for cranes that will be used in seismically active regions and those required to be seismically resistant. Klaus Pokorny, secretary of the ISO subcommittee for design principles and requirements, says that to ensure crane safety, one must first determine the seismic loads that show how a crane responds in earthquakes. Then, one can use design limit states for serviceability limit and ultimate limit to determine the safety level.
