My dictionary defines the word primer as "an elementary textbook that serves as an introduction to a subject of study or is used for teaching." The definition suits this book quite well. Neither prior training nor experience with the subject is presumed by the author, himself a widely experienced practitioner and instructor in matters of system safety. System Safety Primer, one of three books from this author, lends itself as readily to individual study as to classroom use. As was the case with Ericson's earlier books, the writing style is persuasive but not preachy. The persuasion rests exclusively on appeals to logic.
