Two new guidance documents from OSHA and NIOSH explain how spirometry testing can help reduce and prevent worker exposure to respiratory hazards. With one guidance for workers and the other for employers, the documents identify and eliminate hazardous workplace exposures that could result in lung disease. According to OSHA, spirometry is a pulmonary test that measures how well a person moves air through his/her lungs. Workers with exposure to dust, gas or other air contaminants can develop lung damage, so the spirometry test may help detect breathing problems or changes in a worker's lungs.
