During a recent seminar at International Healthcare Workers Safety Center at the University of Virginia, Jannie Jagger, professor of medicine at the University of Virginia, Elise Handelman, RN and occupational health consultant, and Pamela Dembski Hart, principal of Healthcare Accreditation Resources LLC, discussed how to implement best practices for handling medical sharps in nonhospital settings. "There is really a disconnect between the level of safety in relation to the OSHA bloodborne pathogens standard that's provided in hospital settings versus nonhospital settings," Jagger says. Nonhospital settings include private doctors' offices, primary healthcare physicians' offices, urgent care clinics, long-term care facilities, dental clinics, dialysis clinics, ambulatory surgery centers and free-standing laboratories. According to Jagger, it is difficult to define and document what is going on in these settings, making enforcement difficult. The injury rates from specific devices, such as needles, are exactly the same no matter where the devices are being used, she says.
