This quirky little book is not explosive. It is a smoldering glow that illustrates Josh Billings's adage, "The trouble with people is not that they don't know, but that they know so much that ain't so." Bartlett's 17th edition (2002) bowdlerizes it to "isn't so." Bartlett's 13th, less prissy, edition (1955) preserves, "ain't so." Ah yes! Even the trivial gets invaded, infected and devalued by political correctness. Oddly enough, standardizing error starts out by polishing off the standardization of knowledge. The difficulty of standardization of knowledge is that science depends on experiment and observation. Experiment and observation are useful tools for the safety professional.
