In a Dec. 11, 2008, speech, then Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters said Americans are safer than ever on national roadways, with the number of fatalities from traffic crashes expected to reach a record low by the end of 2008. In 2008, 31,110 people died in traffic accidents between January and October, nearly a 10% decrease from 2007's fatalities for the same time period. As far as workplace fatalities go, however, 43% occur from motor vehicle crashes, making it the most common type of fatality. Yet, safe driving policies and procedures are often left out of organizations' occu- pational safety and health programs. "While we are encouraged by these declines, our work is not nearly complete in making our safe transportation network even safer," Peters said. To help teach safety professionals how to establish appropriate policies to manage risks associated with their fleets, ASSE recently hosted the Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle Operations webinar.
