ASSE's Florida members deserve all the credit in the world for supporting ASSE efforts in 2008 at passing one of the more significant occupational safety and health (OSH) bills in recent years in any state, or even at the federal level.rnAt a time when few initiatives to advance safety and health seem to move forward, legislation introduced by Senator Evelyn Lynn (R-Ormond Beach) and Representative Audrey Gibson (D-Jackson-ville)-championed by ASSE-created a FloridarnPublic Sector Task Force to determine how Florida can provide OSH coverage to its public-sector workers. Because Floridarndoes not have its own state OSHA plan, under federal law the state, its counties andrnmunicipalities and other political subdivision employers are not required to provide federal-level OSH coverage to their employees.rnIn May 2007, in testimony before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, ASSE outlined the impact of this loophole in the OSH Act of 1970.
