摘要

Studden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the U.S., striking more than 250,000 people each year or 680 people each day?more than breast cancer, prostate cancer, AIDS, house fires, handguns and traffic accidents combined. Today, fewer than five percent of cardiac arrest victims survive, largely because automated external defibrillators (AEDs) do not reach them within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest. Each minute that passes before defibrillation therapy is administered decreases survival odds by about 10 percent. Due to this limited timeframe, AEDs in the workplace are essential because building security, high-rises, large campuses, heavy urban traffic and other factors often make it impossible for emergency medical services to arrive in time to successfully treat an SCA victim. And, while many progressive organizations have implemented defibrillator programs to protect the safety and health of their employees, they are still in the minority. A recent RoperASW survey on workplace safety and health found that only six percent of the U.S. workplaces polled are equipped with portable defibrillators, despite the urging of organizations such as OSHA. According to the survey, 53 percent of the work-places that currently have portable defibrillators said they would definitely recommend that other companies have AEDs on site. Another 30 percent said they probably would recommend having the devices.
