摘要

A recent article published in Journal of Oc-cupational and Environmental Medicine out-lines a proposed set of core competencies for professionals entering the emerging discipline of total worker health (TWH). According to the authors, the goal is to begin a community dialogue about the education needed for a new brand of OSH professional. "An integrated, inclusive approach to pre-venting on-the-job illnesses and injuries, while simultaneously promoting worker overall health and well-being, is of increas-ing importance," says Lee Newman, lead author and Director of the Center for Health, Work and Envi-ronment at the Colorado School of Public Health. "To meet emerging needs, TWH professionals must have knowledge, skills and experiences covering an array of subjects that con-sider the safety and health of the worker, including working conditions, work environment and the nature of work itself." NIOSH defines TWH as a holistic approach to worker well-being that acknowledges risk factors related to work that contribute to health problems previously considered unre-lated to work. TWH policies, programs and practices integrate protection from work-relat-ed safety and health hazards with promotion of injury and illness prevention efforts to ad-vance worker well-being.
