Participants of National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Unmanned Aerial System Flight and Payload Challenge sought to find improvements in the lifting capability of drones as a means of providing an affordable way to protect public safety in the event of emergencies such as natural disasters. Participants were challenged to create a 35-lb drone that could hoist communications equipment and hover for 2 hours.Participants were presented with a scenario in which a person was reported lost in a mountainous forest where cell phones and first-responder communications do not function. The drone would need to lift a communication box into the air and allow rescue personnel on the ground to communicate with each other.
