Strong domestic container demand continued to propel North American intermodal volumes last year. Despite network congestion and macro-economic headwinds, domestic containers in 2015 reached 6.77 million units, up 5.1 percent compared with 2014's total, according to an Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) report. That helped annual intermodal volume rise 2.8 percent year over year to 16.7 million units. "Even as fuel prices were dropping, domestic container volumes were picking up. This smoothed variations across segments, especially in the fourth quarter," said IANA President and Chief Executive Officer Joni Casey in a press release. Also in 2015, total domestic equipment volume increased 2.8 percent to 8.3 million units, international container counts rose 2.8 percent to 8.4 million units and trailer traffic dipped 6 percent to 1.57 million units on a year-over-year basis.
