The UK is a pioneer in European telecomms liberalisation―so why does its telecomms landscape resemble a scarred battlefield? Too many competitors that have spent years building up positions against the incumbent are ailing badly... The UK's head-start in telecomms liber-alisation has done the sector's new entrants few favours when it comes to building a sustainable business in competition with the incumbent, BT. Much maligned, BT appears to have repositioned itself in its home market, exploiting the financial pressures to which its major competitors are likely to succumb. This article looks at how this situa-tion came about―and 'what happens next?'.
