The transition from boom to bust has left the telecomms sector bereft of fiscal muscle. It is hard to imagine a worse financial climate―but the clouds have gathered just when the industry needs to pay off past excesses and continue investing in the future. On the face of it, the situation is truly appalling. The riches to rags story of the telecomms and technology sector is well documented, but the grim reality bites deep. The simple fact, as seen in this month's News Analysis, that Europe's two largest telcos are home to debt of more than EUD130bn―equivalent to the gross national product of a medium-sized country―is a measure of just how bad it gets.
