The 52nd Congress of the UITP will be taking place in Stuttgart from 1 to 6 June 1997. At the same time, the Annual Congress of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) has been scheduled for 1 and 2 June 1997. Stuttgart is the capital of the German federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and has approximately 560,000 inhabitants. The city spills out of a relatively narrow basin and up onto the surrounding hills and chiefly owes its reputation as one of the most picturesque German cities to this fact. Vineyards extending as far as the city centre (to near the main railway station), generous parks and miles of woodland are just some of the features associated with the city. The city's many theatres and concert halls, its internationally renowned variety theatre and the world-famous Stuttgart Ballet Company, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Bach Academy, which has achieved worldwide prominence under its conductor Helmuth Rilling, all bear witness to Stuttgart's active cultural life. Stuttgart also boasts two universities and several institutes of higher education, as well as countless museums and art galleries.%Le 52ème Congrès de l'UITP sera organisé du 1er au 6 juin 1997. Ce dernier est en effet caractérisé par de nombreuses vignes, de grands parks et de vastes forêts qui s'étendent jusque dans le centre ville, à proximité de la gare centrale. L'importance culturelle de Stuttgart se justifie par ses nombreux th╚?âtres et salles de concert, son théâtre international de variétés ainsi que par le ballet de Stuttgart connu dans le monde entier, son orchestre de chambre et l'académie de Bach qui, sous la direction de Helmuth Rilling, jouit d'une renommée mondiale. Stuttgart abrite également deux Universités, plusieurs Hautes Ecoles et divers musées et galeries.
