摘要

Smallpox, as late as 1967, was contracted by 15 million people worldwide and killed two million people that year. In December 1979, the World Health Organization certified the eradication of the disease. Smallpox: The Death of a Disease (by the man who spearheaded the campaign) tells the story of this remarkable achievement, to date the only disease to have been completely eradicated. At the beginning of the 21st century public health is no longer dominated by the scourge of communicable, infectious diseases, and it is easy to forget the fear and suffering such diseases still cause today in the developing world.
