Portuguese pulp producer The Navigator Company (Navigator) reports improved results for the first half of the year compared with the same period last year despite lower pulp deliveries, which have impacted performance of the company's pulp division. Sales for the reporting period amounting to €814.3m are only slightly higher than for the first six months of last year but Navigator's operating profit and net profit surged by 30% and 24% to €160.8m and €119.4m respectively in the first half of 2018. Navigator benefited particularly from higher selling prices for paper, tissue and pulp, which were able to offset higher costs for production, logistics and labour. Especially caustic soda and chemicals were more expensive in the reporting period compared with the same period last year, the company said. Navigator implemented spot measures to control costs.
