Several multinational cigarette and tobacco companies have filed legal objections at the British High Court to the planned introduction of plain packaging for cigarettes. At the time of going to press, the companies included Philip Morris International (PMI), British American Tobacco, Japan Tobacco International (JTI) and Imperial Tobacco. According to the British press, the UK government could be forced to pay up to £11 bn (€15bn) in compensation if the tobacco companies are successful with their claims. In March 2015, legislation was agreed by the House of Commons and the House of Lords to come into force by May 2016 (with a transitional period of one year), which makes plain cigarette packaging mandatory.
