One objective of bioengineering is ther quantification of the biological andr medical sciences, with the goal ofr improving their exactness and preciseness,r always in an attempt to remove asr many indeterminations and uncertaintiesr as possible, especially when seekingr predictions. The extract at the beginningr of the column, which is attributedr to Leonardo da Vinci, seems to reflect ar very early Renaissance concept in suchr a direction; this concept is indeed morer general because it encompasses all the sciencesr [1]. The famous Vitruvian Man, sor many times reproduced on book coversr and posters, appears perhaps as an anticipatoryr geometrical epitome of that modernr recent aim (Figure 1). However, 200r years before da Vinci was Ramon Llullr (ca. 1232–1315), a Majorcan philosopher,r member of the Third Order of Saintr Francis, and author of important worksr of Catalan literature. Lull is consideredr by some to be a pioneer of computationr theory because of his contributions to logics.r Should he also be considered a veryr early predecessor of biomathematics? Wer leave this question dangling for the historianr and/or the philosopher of history.r In Spain, there is a journal carrying hisr name, Llull (see [12]).
