ARRL President Jim Haynie, W5JBP, along with Special Assistant to the CEO Dave Patton, NN1N, and Technical Relations Specialist Jon Siverling, WB3ERA, attended the 60th convention of Federaci6n Mexicana de RadioExperimentadores (FMRE), Mexico's national Amateur Radio society. It was held in Mexico City October 21-23, 2004. The ARRL representatives had their first chance to meet FMRE's President, Dr Carlos Levy, XE1YK, who has done a terrific job of bringing Mexico's radio clubs together under FMRE. The convention started on Friday morning with an opening ceremony accompanied by a youth band playing music and the national anthem. Following the music were speeches by FMRE officers: Alberto de Icaza de la Parra, Director General, Institute of Sport and Recreation of the State of Querdtaro, representing the Govenor of the State of Quer6taro; Mr Francisco Garrido Patron; President Haynie (with translation by Jon); Mr Nelson Vargas, of CODEME (the federal sports authority), and Mr Reynaldo Gonzalez Bustamente, Director General of Spectrum Administration of COFETEL (Mexico's FCC).
