It is often argued that academia has lagged practice in the field of quality management. Statistical quality control methods were developed by Walter Shewhart, an applied statistician at Bell Labs, and W. Edwards Deming, Joseph M. Juran and Philip B. Crosby all developed their processes, philosophies and teachings in the realm of practice. Academia, however, has done a good job of propagating these concepts and practices. An article by J. Hauser and D. Clausing led to the wide adoption of quality function deployment in the United States. And Richard Schonberger brought just-in-time and lean manufacturing practices to light in the United States with his dissertation research. New quality practices have even emerged from academic research, such as the widely adopted ServQual survey that was developed for use in evaluating and improving service quality.
