In February 2003 a workshop was held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on the topic "The European Union's Impact on Europe's Peripheral Economies." The major interest at the time was with the impact membership in the EU - including the formation the European Monetary Union (EMU) and the adoption of the euro as the single currency of most of the area - would have on the less advanced economies of Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Greece and Turkey. The latter was included because, at the time, it was expected that it would shortly be admitted to the EU. The papers of that workshop were subsequently published in a special issue of this journal.
