With our introductory words for this edition, I hereby claim the first ever appearance of the great thinker Goethe in the model press! I'm sure he'd be grati-ied! You can tell that the model show season is well and truly underway from the Tales From the Trade' that have been steadily filtering back to SC. I was reminded of my days behind the counter by a story of frustration and despair that came in from a trader 'on the front line', as he puts it. Model retailing can be an exasperating working environment for anyone who values language, and at worst, it can make you seriously question how we communicate at all. Our informant had just sold a radio set and was showing the customer the Tx function menu. "So how do you set up the ex-potential, then?" the punter asked. "The exponential?" our hero corrected, and proceeded to demonstrate. Seemingly satisfied, the punter said "OK, so that's the expo-tential'" then?" "Er, not quite", came the reply, "It's called 'Exponential'" "Yeah" replied the punter "That's what I said, innit? Expo-tential!" "No, it's a common mistake," said the trader politely though inwardly fuming, "Look at it like this - it comes from the word 'Exponent', but not from the word 'Potential'. So: 'Exponent' -'Exponential'"
