Having recently taken early retirement, it is a little disconcerting to reflect that it is well over forty years since my first powered, free flight model soared to dizzy heights above my local patch. However, those early enthusiasms quickly gave way to life's other distractions and it would be more than twenty years before I returned to the modelling fold. Radio-controlled Spitfires - a pipedream in the fifties - were now being flown with what seemed like carefree abandon at my old free-flight haunt, Newcastle Town Moor. I could sense an old flame being rekindled within me! What ensued was at times exhilarating and at others, downright painful. From my first trainer I wanted to rush on to scale models, my ultimate goal. Inexperience and over-enthusiasm - that dangerous cocktail - overcame me and I chose what I thought was the shortest route to progres's via a catalogue of nasty, inappropriate, scale prototypes. It was not, without some justification that I was to become known at my local club as 'Crasher Keith...!'
