HFDL, as a mode, has been around for quite some time now and is well established with most major airlines. Development of HFDL was driven by the need for more sophisticated and automatic communication systems between aircraft and the ground services. Whilst VHF ACARS provides a useful service for short-haul flights, a system was required that could provide similar communications when aircraft were on long-haul flights over remote areas. The solution was to make use of the aircraft's HF capabilities as they are ideal for long distance communication. The development linked well with the increasing sophistication of microelectronics, which made the use of fairly complex and robust modulation systems viable. The driving force behind the introduction and ongoing success of HFDL has been ARINC.
