In the last few decades, the development of weatherable, protective coatings for stabilization of plastic components has driven significant expansion in the use of plastics in outdoor applications. One industry that is reaping the benefits of protective coatings is the automotive market. Compared to more traditional materials, such as glass or metal, plastics provide weight savings, increase efficiency and also allow designers a greater freedom in styling without greatly affecting the cost of production. These benefits have driven plastics to permanently replace glass in automotive forward lighting as well as in many other applications.
