Ongoing growth in freight rail traffic and passenger rail and transit ridership,combined with a high retirement rate amongexperienced railway engineering professionals,is creating opportunities for hundreds of newengineering graduates to enter the rail industryeach year. Despite strong global demand foryoung professionals with knowledge of railwayengineering,few programs in the U.S. offerrailway degrees or concentrations,creatinga shortfall in the workforce needed tofillthese vacancies. To help meet this demand,University of Illinois’ Rail Transportation andEngineering Center (RailTEC) has partneredwith KTH Royal Institute of Technology sRailway Group (KTH),in Stockholm,Sweden,to design a professionally-oriented degree thatproduces industry-ready railway engineers: aMaster of Engineering in Railway Engineering.
