This is a new addition to the Princeton Field Guides. It was originally published in French. The area it covers is that defined as the Western Palaearctic: an area that goes as far east as the Urals and down to the north side of the Caucasus mountains and south to the 21st parallel which is around the southern edge of the Sahara. This encompasses 123 (according to the text) or 122 (according to the notes on the cover) species of snake. The reason for this discrepancy maybe that between the French edition and the English translation there have been alterations to the nomenclature for some species: The Playtceps group has been revised and P. rhodorachis has been redefined, the taxonomy of Eirenis persicus has been revised leaving Eirenis occidentalis as a newly defined species, and Dasipeltis bazi is a new species. Alternatively, maybe someone just miscounted. Even so, my observation indicates that snake taxonomy is an active area of research.
